Stress overload is when a person undergoes more strain than he or she can handle. The weak economy has taken a toll not only on finances, but also on our nerves, and we are plagued by uncertainties of the future.

According to Margaret Lunney, RN, PhD and Professor at The City University of New York, stress overload pertains to "excessive amounts and types of demands that require action. It is a human response that is experienced as a problem and contributes to the development of other problems."

Stress overload can be brought about by several factors such as intense pressures, illnesses, long-term difficulties, and leaving little time for relaxation. Long-term exposure to stress can even lead to serious health problems that can disrupt nearly every system in your body. It can raise blood pressure, suppress the immune system, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, cause digestive problems, sleep problems, speed up the aging process and the list goes on.

Because of the widespread damage stress can cause, it’s important to know your own limit. But just how much stress is “too much” differs from person to person. Some people roll with the punches, while others crumble at the slightest obstacle or frustration. Some people even seem to thrive on the excitement and challenge of a high-stress lifestyle.
Your ability to tolerate stress depends on many factors, including the quality of your relationships, your general outlook on life, your emotional intelligence, and genetics.

Things that influence your stress tolerance level:

Your ability to deal with your emotions - You’re extremely vulnerable to stress if you don’t know how to calm and soothe yourself when you’re feeling sad, angry, or afraid. The ability to bring your emotions into balance helps you bounce back from adversity.
Your knowledge and preparation – The more you know about a stressful situation, including how long it will last and what to expect, the easier it is to cope. For example, if you go into surgery with a realistic picture of what to expect post-op, a painful recovery will be less traumatic than if you were expecting to bounce back immediately.

Tips for a Safe & Healthy Spa Experience

With holiday parties marked on everyone's social calendar, salons are sure to see a surge of women getting beautified for a big night out, but sometimes what they see at certain salons isn't so pretty. Here at Skinsational, we are dedicated to our clients' safety and comfort and therefore adhere to the highest standards of cleanliness that comply with the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.

Check out some of these tips and guidelines for top salon practices from the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology that all of our customers are sure to experience at Skinsational this holiday season and all year round!

Take a Look Around

Look for the license. Manicurists, who give pedicures as well as manicures, must have a license from the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, and it must be visible to customers. The license is your assurance that the manicurist has passed an examination and understands the techniques for each procedure, as well as how to properly clean and disinfect instruments and foot spas.

Next, look at the general cleanliness of the place. If the place doesn't look clean, leave. After all, a messy shop may indicate that critical cleaning steps are not being taken, either.

Foot Spa Cleanliness

While waiting for your turn, watch the foot spas. By law, foot spas have to be cleaned and disinfected after each use. Cleaning and disinfecting basins thoroughly is a must-do, or you could run the risk of infection from Mycobacterium fortuitum, a bacterium that can grow in the warm water of a foot spa that hasn't been properly disinfected. Mycobacterium can cause painful skin boils.

Foot Care Do's and Don'ts

Once your feet have been soaked, it's time to smooth them. No razor-edged tools, such as "Credo" blades, should be used to remove calluses or rough skin. Sharp instruments can cut the skin, allowing bacteria to invade the cut. For the same reason, don't shave or wax your legs 24 hours before your pedicure. Cuts on your skin from shaving or waxing can get infected during the foot soak.

When shaping the nails, buffers or emery boards must be new, used only on you and then thrown out. If an instrument cannot be properly disinfected, it must be disposed of after the pedicure. Metal nail files and cuticle pushers must be completely immersed in disinfectant between uses.

Don't Cut Corners to Save $$

If you find a shop that charges considerably less than other nail shops in the area, you should question whether all the necessary cleaning steps are being taken. The equipment used to properly clean and disinfect nail implements and foot spas are an expense, and sometimes to cut costs, a shop will add water to the disinfectants. The problem is, the disinfectant is no longer potent enough to do the job.

Tips for a Stress-Free Holiday Season

The holidays are just around the corner and along with holiday cheer, one can sometimes feel holiday stress. Skinsational Skin and Body Spa has discovered some great de-stressing tips from Dr. Eva Selhub, author of The Love Response and instructor at the Harvard Medical School, that are sure to leave you as jolly as one of Santa's elves.

Tips for managing stress:
1. Focus on an image of something that gives you the experience of awe: Imagine a sunset, picture the face of someone you love, recall watching your child walk for the first time. Hold this image for as long as you wish.

2. Close your eyes or gaze at your hands on your lap and inhale while you count silently to four. Take a little pause and then exhale, counting down from four. Do this at least 10 times.

3. Imagine the sun is shining golden light upon you, creating a glowing shield that holds you and comforts you. You can imagine the faces of people whom you love as your shield. Hold this image as long as you wish.

4. With any of the above exercises, you can repeat these words silently as often as you wish: "The support I need is here. I am loved and valued."

5. Imagine support is coming up from the earth, in through your feet, and up through your body and arms as you rise from your chair and stretch for the sky. As you stretch, inhale and exhale deeply, repeating the phrase above.

6. Call or plan to meet someone who cares about you for support. Make sure you let them know that you do not want advice (unless you do)-you just want support and someone who will listen.

7. Think of something funny or watch something funny on the Internet. Allow yourself to laugh for several minutes. It always helps when you take life less seriously, even if only for a moment.

Treat Your Mom This Mother's Day

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and what better way to show your mom you care than to help her relax!

• For the new mommy or mommy-to-be, a soak in a relaxing, warm tub is an excellent way to relieve stress. Just use a bath thermometer to ensure the temperature of your bath doesn’t go above 100 degrees, since hotter water can potentially harm your baby or increase the risk of miscarriage. Try grating the rind of lemons, limes or oranges into your bath, or use slices of lemon to soothe rough knees, heels and elbows. Add one tablespoon of almond or apricot oil to moisturize dry skin. Or, opt instead for a pregnancy or post-pregnancy massage, which are all the rage at spas these days – massage during pregnancy can improve blood circulation, decrease insomnia, provide flexibility and prepare you for intense labor pains. Post-pregnancy massages reduce stretch marks and can help you shed excess baby weight faster.

• If funds are tight, plan a fun, activity-filled day outdoors. Pack a picnic and head down to the beach with a Frisbee. Afterward, treat her to a relaxing escape by creating a personal spa experience for her home. Set a relaxing atmosphere by dimming the lights and placing scented aromatherapy candles in the bathroom. Create a hydrotherapy bath treatment that will do the double duty of energizing and recharging while leaving her feeling more tranquil. Soaks offer multitude of benefits, including helping to strengthen the immune system and improve metabolism. Mix one cup of sea salts (to exfoliate and revitalize the skin while drawing out toxins) and ½ cup of honey (for moisture-retention). Add several drops of eucalyptus essential oil for its antiseptic and disinfectant properties as well as its energizing effect. Try lavender to calm and relax.

• Give her the give of youth with a skin-revitalizing facial. Start with an exfoliating and deep cleansing mask, such as Skinsational’s Multi-Enzyme Smoothing Peel, to detoxify and remove any impurities from the skin. We know we all need a little something extra to help us relax these days. Bath soaks offer multitude of benefits, including helping to strengthen the immune system and fight aches and pains. Joyce Carboni, founder and CEO of Skinsational Skin and Body Spa, has remedies and recipes for every bath needed to help you get through everyday life.

The ‘I’m stressed out and don’t know what to do’ bath – We know that times are tough these days, and everyone can use a few tips to relieve stress. Try this, fill up your tub with hot water (heat can help you sleep more deeply and soundly) and add a few drops of lavender and orange oil. The lavender relaxes you and produces a restful, peaceful sensation, and the orange oil reduces stress and is used therapeutically as an antidote for sluggish moods. If you don’t have any orange oil lying around the house, feel free to cut up an orange and toss the slices into the bath with you instead!

The ‘I definitely had one too many last night’ bath – If you wake up with a hangover, try this bath for a quick remedy. Run a warm bath (if its too hot it can dehydrate you more) and add in slices of grapefruit and approximately 30 drops of juniper oil. The grapefruit easies nausea and the juniper oil has detoxifying properties that help to cleanse the body after a night of overindulgence. Use your shampoo or liquid soap* to create some much-needed, relaxing bubbles!

*But be careful, Joyce says… “Liquid soap is ok once in a while, but if used often can be very drying!”

The ‘I want to look my best tonight’ bath – Getting ready for a hot date or a night out with the girls? Create your own treatment by mixing 1 cup of sea salts (to exfoliate and revitalize the skin and help draw out toxins) and ½ cup of honey or coconut oil (for moisture-retention). This combination will leave your skin silky smooth and rejuvenated for a night out on the town.

The ‘I feel something coming on’ bath - It seems like flu season is beginning to last longer and longer. If you feel like you’re about to get sick, try this easy fix. While the water is running, toss in 3 bags of green tea. Several studies show that green tea (in particular the chemicals called polyphenols) decreases the infectivity of the influenza virus, and can have an adverse effect on bacteria. Then, mix 12 slices of fresh ginger, or 3 tbs of powered ginger into your hot water. In Chinese medicine this spicy root ranks as a top cold and flu remedy, so by the time you’re done with your bath you’ll be recharged and ready to fight off the viruses!

The ‘I need a lift’ bath - Need something to lift your spirits and trigger those happy thoughts? Use liquid soap or your shampoo for some easy bubbles and mix in several drops of lemongrass oil and a lemon (sliced into little bits). Lemongrass oil can be used as an antidepressant, and can fortify the nerves and uplift your mood, and the lemon’s strong scent awakens and refreshes you (and can actually help you concentrate)!

The ‘I worked out too hard’ bath – Do your muscles ache? Run a warm bath and mix 3 peppermint tea bags, the menthol can boost circulation easing aches and pains. Next add several drops of eucalyptus essential oil for its antiseptic and disinfectant properties as well as its energizing effect. Roll up a towel as a pillow, sit back, and relax.

Unfortunately stress will contribute to premature aging and skin problems. While your skin is producing more oil and sweat, dead skin cells can begin to clutter the surface. Being too busy and strung out to properly take care of the skin and exfoliate, the oil will become trapped, mix with fatty acids and skin bacteria (from the sweat) and cause flare-ups. Since a pimple can take a week or more to surface, your breakout may last long after the stress has passed.

Vitamins, though not necessarily cutting-edge, remain one of the best and most popular ways of preventing stress from showing up on your face. Try these great at home skin care tips between your spa visits to ensure your skin always stays radiant!

Remember to exfoliate once or twice a week. This will help remove dead skin cells, keep pores clear and allow the skin to absorb more moisture. Contrary to popular belief, excess oil production isn’t the only cause of acne, dead skin cells, flakes, etc can also clog pores. For your face we recommend something with ultra-fine jojoba spheres, like Skin Medica’s Skin Polisher, which gently lifts dead cells from the skin’s surface without stripping moisture or over-exfoliating your skin.

The skin around your eyes is very delicate and thin, which allows for age to show easily. Ideally, you want to start using an eye cream in your 20's. Choose one with antioxidants (such as Vitamin C or CoEnzyme Q10) to boost collagen production and help protect the skin from damage. How To Perfect Your Bikini Line

With summer just around the corner, its time to begin to think about that swimsuit you have tucked away in your closet. In addition to hitting the gym and lathering up the SPF, your bikini line becomes a major factor in the perfect beach bod. Shaving and plucking can fix any immediate hair removal need, but waxing is the easiest and most efficient way to achieve the perfect bikini line. Here are some amazing tips and information on how to guarantee your bikini line will look great all summer long.

Make Sure to Exfoliate:

You should exfoliate regularly between treatments while your hair is growing out. However, you should not exfoliate right before and definitely not right after treatment. In fact, we recommend waiting approximately one week after your treatment before using any exfoliating treatments. This will help prevent any burning, scabbing or pain in general! Additionally, because skin is thinner and more sensitive after waxing, you should also avoid hot baths or hot tubs for 24 hours after your wax; the hot water can further irritate sensitive skin.

Post-Treatment:

After waxing, you can also apply a moisturizer with soothing, anti-inflammatory ingredients such as aloe, licorice extract or green tea, to combat any redness. 1% hydrocortisone cream also works wonders to relieve post-wax skin irritation. Make sure that the fragrance does not have any drying ingredients (such as alcohol), which can further irritate skin.

Types of Bikini Waxes:

Many spas have different definitions of types of bikini waxing. During you appointment, be sure to be clear about what you want, but most bikini waxes can be divided into the following four types:

· Traditional Bikini Wax: Hair is removed from outside the panty line, usually up to 1.5 inches or more.

· Brazilian Bikini Wax: Above the vaginal area, a strip of hair is left, up to approximately two inches wide. Hair is removed from behind and around the buttocks area, but not from the labia.

· Extended Brazilian Wax: Above the vaginal area, a narrow vertical strip is left. Hair is removed from both the labia and the buttocks area.

· Full Brazilian Bikini Wax: All hair is removed.

Allow your bikini line to avoid the sun right after hair removal ~ the skin is much more sensitive and will be prone to irritation. And make sure you're applying sunscreen every time you're soaking up the sun to keep your skin smooth, beautiful and young looking.

At age 23, she was recruited by a hospital in Texas where she was the head of a department. One year later she moved to California and since has devoted herself to furthering her professional development by remaining at the forefront of technology.

In 2001, she returned to school and enrolled at Eclectic Skin Institute (now called Esthetic Skin Institute) where she earned her certification for various aesthetic procedures. By 2002, she was learning about laser technology under the guidance of Thomas Simerson and incorporating it into her career. She continues to stay current on her knowledge by attending conferences worldwide. In May 2005, she attended the World Congress in Italy and in March 2007, she attended World Congress in Brazil. Cynthia is a member of The Association of Medical Esthetic Nurses and The Association of Aesthetic Nurses.
