Today's Small Change: Treat Yourself.

There's the Rub

As anyone who has had one will tell you, there's nothing quite like a massage when you're feeling stressed or overworked. In fact, massage is more than just a feel-good practice — it seems to have health benefits too. So whether you're a devotee or just a novice, why not treat yourself to a massage at Skinsational Skin and Body Spa today?!?

While the art of massage has been around for thousands of years, it's now being used to encourage relaxation and treat conditions such as sports injuries and arthritis. Studies have shown that massage helps reduce back pain, nausea, and anxiety, lessens insomnia, and reduces lymphedema (painful swelling caused by buildup of fluid). Massage can also improve range of motion, increase lymph flow (which helps the body filter out waste toxins), boost energy, and promote the release of endorphins, which make you feel good.

There are many different massage techniques. Swedish massage uses different strokes depending on the purpose of the massage. Deep-tissue massage uses slow strokes and pressure to relieve knotted, tense muscles. Myofascial massage involves gentle stretching to help injuries heal. Be sure to discuss what kind of massage you are looking for with us before we  the massage.

While massage is usually performed with the recipient unclothed (but draped with a sheet or towel) and lying down, you can also enjoy a seated massage, in which the practitioner works on you through your clothes.

So come on into Skinsational Skin and Body spa and treat yourself today!

Get Ready for Summer Thursday, May 29th

Sexy Summer Skin

With summer just around the corner, we’re always looking for ways to keep our skin fresh and fabulous!  Joyce Carboni, founder and CEO of Skinsational Skin and Body Spa in downtown Carlsbad, and an expert esthetician with over 24 years of experience, has come up with 6 simple tips for sexy summer skin, and the perfect products to match.  Can’t remember all 6?  Just spell it out, S-U-M-M-E-R!

S unny side up!  It’s true, some sun exposure is good for your skin. The body absorbs Vitamin D, an important nutrient for fighting many cancers. But we all know sunburns are no fun, so if you start to “feel the burn,” use Skinsational Skin and Body Spa’s Calming Tea Gel Mask.  It is a must-have for those with sensitive, sunburned, blotchy or uneven skin.  The oil-free cooling blue gel mask is packed with ingredients to calm skin and reduce redness and inflammation.  Green tea extract provides an antioxidant boost while chamomile, calendula and azulene help skin recover and rebalance.

U nder pressure.  Feeling stressed?  Relax! When you stress out, your skin takes the heat! Like hormones and environmental factors, stress can contribute to breakouts.  Unclog pores and get rid of blemishes with Skinsational Skin and Body Spa Emergency Blemish Treatment, a salicylic and glycolic acid spot treatment. Vitamin C, green tea and centella extracts help prevent scarring and reduce redness. And if you crave instant relief for aching muscles or stress-related headaches, Skinsational Skin and Body Spa Tension Relief Balm is perfect for you!  Feverfew, an herbal remedy traditionally used to ease migraines, is joined together with peppermint and rosemary oil to improve circulation.

M oisturize to revitalize.  Hydration is vital for healthy skin from head to toe.  Drinking lots of water refreshes your skin internally, and even hydrates your muscles, with natural minerals.  You can quench your skin’s thirst from the outside and get an all-over radiant glow with two of our most popular products, Skinsational Skin and Body Spa California Citrus Lotion and California Citrus Shower Gel.  The signature lotion contains chamomile, lavender, and sweet melissa and honey extracts to hydrate the skin. Full of Vitamins A and D, it reduces the appearance of fine lines, while Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant, regenerates and soothes skin. California Citrus Shower Gel tightens pores while softening your skin!  Its scent will refresh and invigorate your senses while essential ingredients, such as cucumber, ivy and comfrey, draw out toxins. Both products are perfect to get that dewy, natural summer glow.

M ay is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month.  The best way to stay protected when you are in the sun is to use a strong sunscreen. Never leave home without it! Apply and reapply throughout your daily activities as sweat, water and other factors can limit your sunscreen’s effectiveness. Skin Armor SPF 30 is an aloe and vitamin-enriched sunscreen that is perfect for everyday use.  This weightless, oil-free sunscreen and sheer moisturizer is formulated to interlock with skin, allowing it to breathe. Skinsational Skin and Body Spa Skin Armor SPF30 is a fragrance-free, PABA free, hypoallergenic and water-resistant sunscreen, recommended for all skin types.

E ssential vitamins enrich your complexion.  You are what you eat! By incorporating certain foods into your diet, you can vastly improve the condition of your skin. Low-fat dairy products provide the body with Vitamin A, necessary for skin strength and repair. Berries and plums help to keep skin looking younger, longer with a high antioxidant content, which helps prevent skin cells from damage. The anti-inflammatory properties of green tea are yet another benefit to your skin’s health, and can also reduce the risk of UV damage. In order to absorb Vitamin C and eliminate uneven skin tone, use our highly potent Skinsational Skin and Body Spa Vitamin C and Collagen Serum. Twenty percent of concentrated Vitamin C is absorbed to protect against sun damage, while simultaneously moisturizing and healing to reveal brilliant, radiant skin.

R emove, refresh, reveal!  Start remove excess oils from your face, refresh with Skinsational Skin and Body Spa Citrus Foaming Wash, and reveal the new you! This wash is a gentle, nourishing cleanser guaranteed to soothe skin while it deep cleans and removes excess oils without over stripping.  Aloe vera extract, allantoin and ascophyllum nodosum extract help nourish skin and promote healthy cellular renewal.

Then follow up with Skinsational Pumpkin Enzyme Peel to discover your silkier, smoother and more radiant skin!  Proven to dramatically diminish fine lines and improve clarity and texture of all skin types, this exfoliating mask contains a multitude of nutrients including natural pumpkin extract, pineapple and papaya enzymes.

How To Perfect Your Bikini Line

With summer just around the corner, its time to begin to think about that swimsuit you have tucked away in your closet. In addition to hitting the gym and lathering up the SPF, your bikini line becomes a major factor in the perfect beach bod. Shaving and plucking can fix any immediate hair removal need, but waxing is the easiest and most efficient way to achieve the perfect bikini line. Here are some amazing tips and information on how to guarantee your bikini line will look great all summer long.

Make Sure to Exfoliate:

You should exfoliate regularly between treatments while your hair is growing out. However, you should not exfoliate right before and definitely not right after treatment.  In fact, we recommend waiting approximately one week after your treatment before using any exfoliating treatments.  This will help prevent any burning, scabbing or pain in general! Additionally, because skin is thinner and more sensitive after waxing, you should also avoid hot baths or hot tubs for 24 hours after your wax; the hot water can further irritate sensitive skin.

Post-Treatment:

After waxing, you can also apply a moisturizer with soothing, anti-inflammatory ingredients such as aloe, licorice extract or green tea, to combat any redness.  1% hydrocortisone cream also works wonders to relieve post-wax skin irritation.   Make sure that the fragrance does not have any drying ingredients (such as alcohol), which can further irritate skin.

Types of Bikini Waxes:

Many spas have different definitions of types of bikini waxing. During you appointment, be sure to be clear about what you want, but most bikini waxes can be divided into the following four types:

·      Traditional Bikini Wax: Hair is removed from outside the panty line, usually up to 1.5 inches or more.

·      Brazilian Bikini Wax:  Above the vaginal area, a strip of hair is left, up to approximately two inches wide.  Hair is removed from behind and around the buttocks area, but not from the labia.

·      Extended Brazilian Wax: Above the vaginal area, a narrow vertical strip is left.  Hair is removed from both the labia and the buttocks area.

·      Full Brazilian Bikini Wax: All hair is removed.

Allow your bikini line to avoid the sun right after hair removal ~ the skin is much more sensitive and will be prone to irritation. And make sure you're applying sunscreen every time you're soaking up the sun to keep your skin smooth, beautiful and young looking.

Now, let the fun begin...

Skinsational Staff Continously Working to Further Their Education

  • Founder/ CEO Joyce Carboni and Karen McBride recently attended an ISPA conference to listen to visionary Dr. Maya Angelou speak about spa life. At the inspirational closing session, Dr. Angelou said:

"I know when some people think of spas, they think of saps as a frivolity; a place for frivolity.

I know that the intention is to offer people a chance to better themselves... and if they better themselves physically they will feel better about themselves psychologically."
