Stressed?

Unfortunately stress will contribute to premature aging and skin problems. While your skin is producing more oil and sweat, dead skin cells can begin to clutter the surface. Being too busy and strung out to properly take care of the skin and exfoliate, the oil will become trapped, mix with fatty acids and skin bacteria (from the sweat) and cause flare-ups. Since a pimple can take a week or more to surface, your breakout may last long after the stress has passed.

Vitamins, though not necessarily cutting-edge, remain one of the best and most popular ways of preventing stress from showing up on your face. For instance, Retinol or Retin-A, the dietary form of vitamin A, is a fat-soluble, antioxidant important for vision and bone growth. When absorbed through the skin, it increases the rate of skin cell turnover, and provides a temporary increase in collagen, giving a more youthful appearance. By stimulating collagen and elastin production in the skin, it cleanses the follicle, evens skin tone and improves the skin’s overall texture.

Similarly, Vitamin C is an age-old ingredient that is proven to improve blood flow, boost collagen production in the skin and fend off free radicals. For this reason, Skinsational offers a signature Vitamin C Facial, an antioxidant treatment designed to increase cellular turnover while helping to hydrate, nourish and strengthen skin. Over time, these types of treatments can greatly help to reduce existing age spots and wrinkles and prevent new ones from forming.

Another type of treatment also experiencing an increase in popularity among the anti-aging crowd are acid-based therapies. Ingredients such as Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, works well in preventing and treating damaged skin, and effectively battling scars, wrinkles and fine lines. It can also help prevent vitamin C and vitamin E deficiency. In addition to making your skin look fabulous, ALA is natural and non-toxic, making it ideal for people with sensitive skin or who are prone to allergic reactions to other types of skin care products.

Glycolic acid-based treatments are also in demand, and spas have increasing integrated this miracle ingredient into every type of treatment, from facials to manicures. Glycolic acid helps stimulate collagen, elastin and glyco amino glycans (moisture binding ground substances). Acting as a highly effective exfoliator that speeds renewal of the top layer of skin, it also cleanses the follicle, evens skin tone and improves the texture of the skin. This is especially important for the hands, which tend to show age since they are often neglected and abused.

Skinsational offers an Age Fighter Manicure, ideal those who need some hand revitalization. During the treatment, hands are soaked in a stress-relief bath, rejuvenated with a gentle enzyme and glycolic peel and refreshed with a nourishing mask. The treatment is finished with polish, and leaves the hands looking fresh and rejuvenated.

Today’s spa goers are looking for experiential journeys and integrative experiences that bridge wellness and indulgence. Additionally, with the large number of baby boomers entering midlife, the demand for anti-aging treatments is greater than ever. Spas are embracing both of these trend and, more often, encouraging a blend of elements that enable a long-lasting transformation from the inside out rather than just a “quick fix” or temporary indulgence. Spas are also addressing this kind of “inner beauty” in new ways, such as with workshops and classes that cover topics like healthy eating, money management, meditation and more.

Skinsational's goal is to create an atmosphere where guests will find a well-earned respite from the rigors of everyday life, a haven where they will experience nurturing of mind, body and spirit. Spa founder and director, Joyce Carboni, has used her broad experience in the spa industry to develop a wonderful day spa experience without the requirement of going to expensive resorts or destination spas. Her belief is that people should be able to spend a few, hassle-free hours in a spa to feel relaxed and refreshed close to home. At Home Skin Care Tips

Try these great at home skin care tips between your spa visits to ensure your skin always stays radiant!

  • Remember to exfoliate once or twice a week. This will help remove dead skin cells, keep pores clear and allow the skin to absorb more moisture. Contrary to popular belief, excess oil production isn’t the only cause of acne, dead skin cells, flakes, etc can also clog pores. For your face we recommend something with ultra-fine jojoba spheres, like Skin Medica’s Skin Polisher, which gently lifts dead cells from the skin’s surface without stripping moisture or over-exfoliating your skin.
  • The skin around your eyes is very delicate and thin, which allows for age to show easily. Ideally, you want to start using an eye cream in your 20's. Choose one with antioxidants (such as Vitamin C or CoEnzyme Q10) to boost collagen production and help protect the skin from damage. Our favorites are Jan Marini's Age Intervention Eye Cream or C-Esta Eye Repair Concentrate, and Skin Medica's TNS Illuminating Eye Cream.
  • Try a sugar scrub for extra exfoliation on your body. Because sugars bind to water it will lock in moisture (especially important during the drier months) and leave skin looking radiant. Pure Fiji or Malie Organic Sugar Scrubs are fabulous for making skin baby soft and they have a matching body lotion!
  • In Southern California, its important to always protect your skin and sunscreen is THE most important step in your daily routine in keep your skin healthy. Find a moisturizer with SPF30+ to hydrate, while protecting skin at the same time. Sun exposure can cause short and long-term damage such as dark spots, wrinkles and possibly skin cancer. Make sure to apply 30 minutes before you go out into the sun and if you can, avoid the sun between 10AM and 4PM (when the sun's rays are the strongest). Even if you are indoors all day, your skin is still exposed to the sun during the time that you spend driving to and from work. Our hottest seller’s are Skinsational’s own Skin Armor SPF 30 and Skin Medica’s Environmental Defense Crème with SPF30+.
  • Need to re-hydrate your skin? Look for creamy, emollient-based masks with ingredients such as Vitamin E or avocado oil, or make a quick and simple mask at home! Mix half an avocado and one fourth cup of honey in a blender. Apply to your skin and leave it on for 5-10 minutes. Afterwards, rinse with a washcloth drenched in cool water.
